Reclaiming the customer interface

Why excellent UX decides about the survival of energy providers

The German energy market sits in a paradox.
Technical complexity is rising fast through decentralisation, smart grids, and e-mobility, while customer loyalty has hit a historic low. A Simon-Kucher study from March 2026 found only one in three households still relies unconditionally on its local provider. Churn at established utilities runs as high as 46%, against around 27% for newer, digital-first energy-tech players, with comparison portals driving the switching.

Selling kilowatt-hours has become a race to the bottom, and standard services like online centres, chatbots, and digital billing are now a baseline expectation, not a differentiator. The real competition is shifting to connected home ecosystems: solar, battery storage, heat pumps, and smart charging, bridged by the dynamic tariffs now mandated under §41a EnWG. Yet an Axxcon benchmark from March 2026 shows the top players already offer 36 of 46 innovative products on average, while small and mid-sized utilities manage just 20.

Energy suppliers need to shift being to "life-service providers," one that understands people rather than meters and shows up where daily life happens: on the smartphone, intuitive and in real time. The engine for that shift is a Digital Experience Platform (DXP). It breaks open data silos as an orchestration layer over legacy systems, enables one-click cross-selling, builds in accessibility as standard, and turns smart-meter and AI data into proactive, personalised service.

Maingau, Yippie, Stadtwerke Düsseldorf, and Grünwerke all show it working in practice, and a modular MVP approach means even smaller utilities can start small, one touchpoint at a time and scale investment at their own pace.
To put it blunty: the energy transition is digital or it doesn't happen, and whoever aces the customer interface performs in the market.
